ACL Releases New Managed Platform for Audit
By now you’ve probably heard that ACL has launched a new product to help you and your team take audit analytics to the next level. Attendees at ACL Connections 2008 were among the first to see live demonstrations of ACL AuditExchange 2009. The new product started shipping in early May to customers all over the world who purchased in advance of its release.
ACL AuditExchange enables every member of the audit team to benefit from audit analytics. Whether you are an audit leader who needs to quickly review results and findings, or a technical audit specialist who enjoys creating audit tests, ACL AuditExchange offers different functionality. It enables you to create your own audit repository that contains all your analytics – tables, data sets, scripts, results and findings. In this central and secure location, analytics can be shared, used and re-used time and time again to ensure repeatable, consistent, and high quality audits without duplication of effort. The audit knowledge kept within the AuditExchange repository stays even when team members move on.
ACL AuditExchange incorporates ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) technology from market-leader Informatica® to help you address one of the toughest challenges you face – data access. It allows data to be populated within the AuditExchange repository from a multitude of sources including SAP and Oracle Financial data, legacy data, and other complex and industry-specific sources. ETL for ACL AuditExchange streamlines data access and makes it easy for any team member to get the data they need for their analysis when they need it. As all the data sets are stored in the AuditExchange repository, they will be available for repeated use and shared across the team.
ACL AuditExchange will be available in French, German, Portuguese and Spanish later this year.

UPC Ireland Develops Cost-effective Revenue Assurance Solution Using ACL
As a result of merging NTL Ireland and Chorus into one company under UPC Ireland, UPC needed to develop a system to reconcile billing, analyze multiple data sources and embed business logic into applications. Their Revenue Assurance team already used ACL technology and wanted to further expand the use of the product to support the merger.
The result was a series of applications built on ACL Audit Analytics technology which were all completed in six weeks or less - from initial design to full implementation. One such application — RACER — automates the entire reconciliation process and is able to load data while the system is not being used. RACER allows its client to identify errors before they impact customers.
By benchmarking its Revenue Assurance compliance against other operators, UPC Ireland can demonstrate savings in excess of €750,000 per annum. The other platform reconciliation systems have also achieved payback and significantly cut errors. These applications – powered by ACL Audit Analytics – are critical to a strong, cost-effective revenue assurance environment. The RA team is extending its ACL use to create tests that identify fraudulent service applications. Other UPC Ireland teams and affiliates are also looking to implement ACL Audit Analytics, and the company is now currently implementing ACL AuditExchange 2009.
Receiving the Impact Award on behalf of the company, Glen, Manager of Revenue Assurance, Fraud and Risk said: “I’m very happy that our team has been recognized for our outstanding results using ACL technology. These applications are critical and have demonstrated that it is possible to develop very cost-effective revenue assurance solution using ACL as the underlying platform.”

Connections 2008, the ACL Global User Conference, was a resounding success for all involved! Attendees made lasting connections with other ACL customers, learned more innovative ways to use ACL technology, and gained insight into ACL AuditExchange 2009. Over 200 people from 155 organizations and 25 countries came to Vancouver to hear 23 speakers over the two and a half days. See the full list of organizations who attended.
The conference kicked off on Sunday with customers attending one of three available Workshops – Advanced Tips, Continuous Auditing & Monitoring and ACL for Managers - and followed this with the Welcome Reception on the 34th floor of the Hyatt Regency Hotel overlooking downtown Vancouver. Attendees experienced an amazing view, superb food and an excellent networking opportunity with peers and members of the ACL team.
Monday morning began with Keynote speaker Carole Switzer, President of OCEG (Open Compliance & Ethics Group), discussing how Internal Audit can help keep the organization in the “sweet spot”. Carole presented a GRC self-evaluation tool for internal audit, which OCEG developed in response to demand from some of the world's leading companies.
Attendees were given a glimpse of the ACL product roadmap including the first public presentation on ACL AuditExchange. This session generated much interest and attendees lined up to see the very popular AuditExchange demonstrations between sessions.
Joel Kramer, Managing Director MIS Institute, gave a rousing presentation on the Attributes of a World Class Audit Department. The session was broadcast live via webcast to an audience of more than 350 people. One webcast attendee commented ‘’Joel Kramer’s presentation made my day!’’.
The conference was filled with customer case studies, sessions on data access, fraud detection, scripting, GRC, and making the most of audit analytics. ACL Super Users Dave Coderre and Porter Broyles delivered twice the content with an encore presentation due to popular demand.
Tuesday afternoon wrapped up with a very interactive and informative session to help educate and promote ACL User Groups which has since generated eight new customers looking to start up groups in their areas. ACL President and CEO Harald Will bid farewell to conference goers, thanking everyone for their continued support and keen interest in ACL over the years.

Ideas for Improving Your ACL Documentation
By Keith Barber, ACDA, CISA
IT Auditor, Frost Bank, United States
Member San Antonio Texas ACL User Group
After attending Connections, it occurred to me that a topic worth more discussion is documenting your ACL work. Documenting the procedures used in ACL for a variety of audiences can be challenging to say the least. There are three components that I will discuss: memo, log file and output. The documentation described below is intended for a mixture of audience: upper level management, a requestor of ACL work and staff that use output for testing.
Memo
- Objective
Give the reader background on the ACL procedures and how they relate to the business. If a request form has been submitted from a user then include a reference to that document. The advantage of a request from a user is to document the request and gain a better understanding what is the intended use of the output. - Contact List
Lists names and contact information of all parties involved in the execution of the ACL procedures. - Data Description
Intended to help the reader understand the source of the data used in the procedures. Remember to describe format of the data, type of data, and how it was obtained. Include how the source data was created and include screen captures/SQL Query used. There is an opportunity to include a note of any data issues incurred during the data acquisition process. - Business Rules
This section will help management better understand how business rules impact the data and process. It also aids the reader to better understand why certain GL account numbers (sales, forecast) or Cost Centers were excluded from the ACL procedures. - Control Totals/ Reconciliation
A critical part in gaining comfort with the completeness and accuracy of the data. A reconciliation is different than control totals and it is important to document which method was used and why. Any differences in the reconciliation need to be summarized so that the reader has an understanding of how accurate the source data is. Explaining differences help the reader gain comfort with the completeness and accuracy of the data. - Results
Summarize the findings and results of the ACL procedures. Reference the output file containing the detail to support the summarization. - Special Notes
An optional section that could include items of interest that could potential impact future procedures. An example would be a future ERP upgrade by end of fiscal year. - Conclusion
Summarize the ACL procedures to the objective(s) and to help the reader tie it all together.
Log File
The clean log file needs to include all finalized ACL procedures to support the output results from ACL. Include comments in the log file to help a reviewer understand your work.
Output File
Commonly created with the intent to be opened with a spreadsheet application. Create one spreadsheet with multiple worksheets with a lead worksheet that describes the procedures.
There are likely Scripting guidelines in place and these should be documented also. And remember, documenting naming conventions for source data fields, computed fields, variables, saved filters and output file names is also a useful idea and helps your processes.
I hope these suggestions will help start a foundation of consistent documentation standards in all of your ACL projects. It has certainly helped with mine!
Share Ideas, Tips & Tricks in User Forum
Similar to the face-to-face User Group meetings, the online User Forums are a great place to discover how others are solving their data analytics issues and challenges and to ask questions on best practices and different methodologies. Users from all over the world exchange ideas, tips and tricks and help each other to do more and be better. With seven unique topic areas from general to specific, users have the ability to focus on things that interest them most.

National Audit Office of Finland Gains More
Effective Financial Audits
As a public sector body, the NAO strives to ensure compliance with the central government budget and regulations concerning financial management, while ensuring that a true and fair view is reported on government finances and performance. The NAO also audits the policy effectiveness and operational performance of the government activities financed from the central government resources and enhances good governance and principles of sound financial management. As a result, the Office needed to create homogenous procedures for testing data from all government offices and agencies, and be able to access data in a variety of formats. In addition, each auditor was required to learn how to use the analytic technology in an independent, effective and skilled manner.
AARM Delivers Best-in-Class Risk Management
The advertising industry’s pre-pay environment presents a challenge, because clients transfer huge sums of money to agencies based on cost estimates, relying on these firms to repay unused funds and adhere to proper financial controls. In 2001, AARM launched its advertising audit consulting services, using spreadsheet technologies to pull reports from ad agency accounting systems and perform data testing. The work was cumbersome and manually intensive. Multiple data formats and platforms – including PDF and report files, spreadsheets, and industry-specific management systems – further complicated the audit process.
Training & Consulting
State Government Leaps Forward with ACL Consulting
One of our Consultants was recently in Olympia, Washington, working onsite for the Washington Department of Licensing (DOL), who recently purchased ACL AuditExchange. Following is a glowing report from the leader of their audit team:
“WOW! is an understatement on the preliminary results of the ACL Consultant’s time with us. We are excited about the results so far and are anxiously awaiting some ‘fine tuning’ of the fantastic Scripts developed for our data sources. One particular opportunity, where we have been repeatedly told ‘no way’, the ACL Consultant used ‘fuzzy logic’ on two extremely disparate databases for a solution set. Also, his demonstrated skill set as an ultimate geek regarding ACL and databases, is combined with a unique ability to explain in lay terms to those of us that are basically clueless. Thanks again. It has been a long wait but we are excited about the progress.”

Creating Tables from Adobe PDF Files
This document describes how ACL’s data definition wizard imports data from different sources to create tables. With that understanding, you can use the data definition wizard to import tables from Adobe PDF (Portable Document Format) files.
Understanding Print Image Files
Print image files, also known as report files, are often complex in structure, and differ widely in the types of the data they report and the way they present data. For this reason, defining report files in the Data Definition Wizard is not a fully automated process and requires manual user input.
Using the Data Definition Wizard effectively requires that you can distinguish between multiple record types in a report, and that you have a thorough understanding of all the available parameters.
Find out how to break down a report into different record types, how to define a sample report, and how to apply the various parameters.
FAQs
Product: ACL
Level: Beginner
What is the use of the "Paste Parameters" box found in the Expression Window?
When building an expression using the Expression Window in ACL you can see a check box called "Paste Parameters" on the right-lower-corner. This box is checked by default. If this box is selected, when double-clicking on any function (from the Functions area), the function will be written in the Expression box indicating all the parameters you may use for that specific function. On the contrary, if that box is not selected, then the function will pass to the Expression box with no parameter indicators on it. In other words, the function will be empty.
How can I divide the log of the Project I am currently working on to get specific actions to be organized in session?
Each time you open a Project in ACL, the Log registers a new session. New sessions are identified by the time and the date on which you opened the Project. Commands executed in ACL will be registered in the Log within the session where they occurred.
However, you do not have to close and open a Project for a new session to be created in the Log.
How can I add comments in the Log?
Commenting the Log can be very useful in understanding the work you have completed in the past. To add a comment in the Log of the Project you are working on, select Tools > Add Comment. You will be prompted for the comment you wish to make. After clicking “OK” you will see the new comment in the Log.

ACL & FinanceWeek Audit & Compliance Blog

The most recent post on the John Verver (ACL vice-president of Alliances & Product Strategy) Finance Week thought-leadership blog is entitled "Auditors: The Battlefield Vultures or Under-Rated Stretcher Bearers."
In this new post, John discusses how internal audit is shifting from a focus on financial reporting controls to overall risk management. For this change to be reflected within the organization internal audit and management must develop a common understanding of the unique position the internal audit team holds within the organization. It is still not that uncommon for some managers to see internal audit as a necessary evil — as the people who "come in after the battle and bayonet the wounded." For this relationship to evolve internal audit must demonstrate to management that they can add tangible value to business performance.

Tectonic Shifts in Finance in UK
Retailspeak, a UK-based magazine on retail technology, covered ACL's Tectonic Shifts in Finance survey of 300 global businesses in their Spring '08 issue. The ACL EMEA survey examined the financial fault lines created by the fast-paced business growth in many markets around the world and highlights high, medium or low levels of change within the finance function. It then further segmented these organizations based on their risk of fraud, error or abuse due to the levels of change reported.
The report also explores the value of continuous monitoring and auditing to ameliorate the challenges identified in businesses experiencing high levels of change. Fifty-nine percent of respondents agreed that continuous monitoring and continuous auditing is an effective way to mitigate risk and improve the accuracy of their financial reporting.
