FAQs

What versions of SAP are supported by Direct Link 8?

ACL Direct Link version 8 supports SAP S/4HANA, SAP ERP, SAP CRM, SAP ECC, SAP SRM, SAP SCM and SAP EWM. ACL’s policy is to only support versions that are supported by SAP. SAP no longer supports any of the versions prior to SAP ECC 6.0 and SAP CRM 7.0 systems under their regular and extended maintenance terms.

Direct Link supports all SAP supported operating systems on the servers that SAP applications run on.

What is the language & licensing of a typical SAP Environment “Installation”?

A typical SAP installation consists of an SAP development system, an SAP test system and an SAP production system. In practice, the term “System” is used interchangeably with “instance.” A system consists of one or more physical servers. There can be other types of systems in an installation (e.g., sandbox, production support, etc.).

ACL’s new licensing model requires that you purchase one Direct Link production license for your SAP production system and one non-production license that covers all other non-production systems in the SAP installation that supports the production system. The Direct Link SAP add-on is installed at the SAP system level and is available to all servers that are part of the SAP system that it is installed on.

Our SAP system is UNICODE but I want to use ACL™ Analytics Non-UNICODE, can this work?

Yes, Direct Link will automatically convert your data to Non-UNICODE.

How does licensing work for Direct Link?

A production license is required for each SAP production system and a single non-production license is required for all of the SAP systems that support the production system (development, test, sandbox, etc.).

Do we need to have an SAP user license to use Direct Link?

Yes, you need to have SAP dialog user credentials on all SAP systems you wish to access with Direct Link. This user also requires the correct permissions since Direct link enforces the table authorizations in a user’s SAP profile.

What exactly goes on to our SAP server and what does it do?

The Direct Link software is packaged as a SAP certified add-on and is installed on the SAP system. This add-on contains several function modules written in ABAP (SAP’s native programming language) and a handful of SAP data structures to support these function modules. These allows users with appropriate SAP permissions to use Direct Link to search the SAP data dictionary and extract data.

Will Direct Link affect performance of our SAP instance?

Direct Link is an SAP certified interface. For single table queries, Direct Link’s performance impact is comparable to the SAP Data Browser (SAP transaction SE16). For table joins, Direct Link’s performance impact is comparable to the SAP Query Tool (SAP transaction SQ01) or SAP QuickViewer (SAP Transaction SQVI).

Would there ever be a situation where Direct Link would corrupt SAP data?

No, Direct Link is read-only and cannot update SAP data.

Where can I find “proof” that Direct Link is a SAP-certified solution?

ACL is listed in SAP’s Application Development Partner Directory.

Does Direct Link Support SAP Business One?

No, but data from SAP Business One can be accessed from ACL Analytics using ODBC or from ACL™ Analytics Exchange using a direct database connection.

Does Direct Link support SAP S4/HANA?

Yes, ACL Direct Link has achieved SAP-certified integration with SAP S/4HANA, as well as SAP ERP, SAP CRM, SAP SRM, SAP SCM and SAP EWM.

Is it possible to import from SAP “structures” instead of Tables?

No, it is not possible to access data in SAP structures. Though the metadata for SAP structures are stored in the SAP data dictionary, SAP structures are not used to store data in the database. Consequently, data cannot be retrieved from SAP structures because there is no data to retrieve. SAP structures are used by SAP ABAP reports or programs as working areas during the execution of the program to store the variable values used by the program for calculation or for displaying data. Once the program or report stops running, structures no longer contain any data.
